Interview with Carmen Burguess





q)What is your name?


a)Carmen Burguess


q) Where do you live and work?


a)Right now I live in Berlin (Germany), before I've lived for a couple of years in Spain. I'm from Buenos Aires (Argentina)


q)What is your creative process like?


a)At the moment, my favorite process is make collages series and add text simultanely.


q)What is your favorite medium?


a)I like to use dolls as a basis for making sculptures.


q)What is your current favorite subject?


a)Portrait of imaginary characters.


q)How long does it take for you to finish a piece?


a)Usually I work with several pieces simultaneously.

I can spend a whole day and a whole night working in my studio. It depends. For a single piece... sometimes is´t never finished, sometimes I get it inmediately.


q)What has been your biggest accomplishment so far?

q)Are there any contemporary artists that you love?


a)Of course.

q)Anything that people should know about that we don’t??


a)Spirits are real.


q)What is your best piece of advice for those who would like to rise in their level of artistry?


a)Follow your own creative impulses and if you don't have nothing to say, devote yourself to cooking or something like that.


q)What inspires you to keep going when the work gets frustrating or tough?


a)I have no difficult with the "toughs" things. I like when the things aren´t easy. But when I found something "frustrating", hate is my engine.


q)How do you describe your work to those who are unfamiliar with it?


a)Fictional and expressive portraits made with an wild collage technique.


q)What kind of training did you have which helped you achieve your current level of artistry?


a)I'm autodidact, instead of training I can tell you that I had reached a point in my life where nothing gave me satisfaction, so I decided to dedicate myself to only do what I like, I stopped worrying about the time that I devote myself to take it. Then I experimented on my own for many hours.


q)Is there a tool or material that you can’t imagine living without?


a)No.


q)Who are your influences?


a)Harmony Korine, Genesis P. Orridge, Morrissey, Mark E. Smith, Tomás Nochteff, Edward Gorey,Charles Burns,Daniela Zahra, Marcelo Moreira, Charlemagne Palestine, Javier Calvo, Pedro Amodio, Mujercitas Terror, Nico, Jenniffer Jason-Leigh, Helena Bonham Carter, Ray Caesar, Saki, Joe Coleman... lots of artists, movies and musicians for the 50's, especially obscure rockabilly singers and girl groups, also many people who I cannot identify but said once phrases that I've listened and recorded in my memory for ever.

a)Humor &sad and beautiful things.
